HEVN Portrait of Viking Tore Hund - Museum Quality Print

HEVN (Revenge in Norwegian) is a portrait of Tore Hund who was a prominent Viking chieftain and warrior from the early 11th century, hailing from the northern region of Norway. He was born into the powerful Bjarkøy clan, a lineage that held significant influence in the region, and where I live.

Tore Hund is best known for his role in the Battle of Stiklestad in 1030, where he opposed King Olaf II Haraldsson, later known as Saint Olaf. Tensions between Tore Hund and Olaf arose due to various political and personal grievances, including the killing of Tore's nephew Asbjorn Selsbane by Olaf’s men. This animosity led Tore to align with other dissatisfied chieftains and spearhead the resistance against Olaf’s attempts to consolidate his rule and enforce Christianity across Norway.

The culmination of Tore Hund's opposition came at the Battle of Stiklestad, one of the most famous battles in Norwegian history. Tore Hund played a crucial role in Olaf’s defeat and death, reportedly striking the fatal blow that killed the king with his spear, (to which there is a monument on the island of Bjarkøy).

Despite this victory, the aftermath of the battle saw significant changes. Olaf’s death and subsequent canonization as a saint by the Church altered the political landscape, with Olaf being revered as a martyr. Tore Hund's legacy is a complex one; while he was a powerful figure who successfully challenged royal authority, his role in Olaf's death led to a mixed historical reputation. He eventually embarked on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem, a common act of penance during that era, and little is known of his fate thereafter.
